Baseball Player

The Resume

Why he might be annoying:

In the Major Leagues, he played for both 'cursed' teams, the Cubs and the Red Sox.
He only hit 13 home runs in 590 Major League at-bats.
He struck out in 121 of those at-bats. He is prone to strikeouts. He struck out 147 times in 2004.
He is one of the most walked players in Japan.
He openly criticized the Yomiuri Giants, stating 'I hate the Giants. Everybody is lousy, I hate this. Our pitchers throw the ball right down the middle of the plate and I take the blame? (April 2005)'
He missed a 'customary hero interview,' and when asked why, he replied 'I'm going to be fired, I won't be here next year. That's why. (July 2005)'
When Barry Bonds was told about Rhodes tying the Japanese record for single-season home runs, he said, 'but it's Japan, man. (2001)'
He only left the Kintetsu Buffaloes because he wouldn't abide by their policy of only signing players to one-year contracts.
He was drafted at 175 pounds, but ballooned to 210.
He is the Barry Bonds of Japan.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He is fluent in Japanese.
He went from being a fast lead-off hitter to a powerful clean-up hitter.
He was Kintetsu's most popular player.
He has multiple endorsement deals in Japan, including Nike.
He is one of the most popular foreign players in Japanese baseball history.
He got his nickname at the age of six when he refused to cry after being hit in the eye with a baseball.
He said of his trip to Japan, 'I was going to come over there and learn their culture and not try to bring my culture over there to them.'
He tied the single-season Japanese record for home runs with 55 (2001).
He would have broken the record if Japanese players hadn't pitched around him. They did not want the record holder to be a foreigner.
Japanese baseball commissioner Hiromori Kawashima said, 'Rhodes was robbed of a chance to achieve the record, and it was not the way players are supposed to play.'
His comments on the record included, 'If Sadaharu Oh wants the record that bad, then he can keep it...I mean, Babe Ruth is still Babe Ruth, right?'
He became the second man to hit three Opening Day home runs. He did it as a member of the Cubs against the New York Mets' Dwight Gooden (1994).
He stole 64 bases in a minor league season (1988).
His popularity in Japan reached the point where he was offered the starring role in a soap opera.
