    (January 19, 1934- )
    Born in Stratford, Ontario, Canada
Canadian news journalist, reporter, and anchor
    Anchor of CTV News (1976-September 1, 2011)
Reporter and anchor for CBC (1954-1976)
One of the reasons he left CBC was his frustration at union regulations which confined news anchors to the role of announcer, essentially prohibiting them from writing their own scripts or participating in editorial decisions concerning the news broadcast.
He also stood to gain financially from the move, as CTV was within the private sector and could offer him a higher wage (while the CBC is a crown corporation).
He is known for closing each telecast of his evening news with, 'And that's the kind of day it's been.'
He denied rumors of retirement that came about in February 2010.
However, he finally came clean about retirement by announcing that effective September 2011, he would step down from the anchor desk.
He is one of Canadian media's most notable personalities.
He covered many news events occurring in and outside of Canada including the Berlin Wall fall, Princess Diana's funeral, and 9/11.
He was honored in 1998 as Officer of the Order of Canada.
In 2006, he surpassed ABC News anchor and fellow Canadian Peter Jennings to become the longest serving network news anchor in television history.
Three years later, he broke KTLA news anchor Hal Fishman's record for longest serving news anchor of an English language network in North America.
