The Resume

    (July 24, 1932- )
Born in New York City, New York
Studio executive at Paramount, MGM, and Lorimar
Editor in chief of ‘Variety’ (1989-2009)
With Peter Guber, hosted ‘Shootout’ on AMC (2003-08)

Why he might be annoying:

According to ‘Variety’ staffers, he peppered his speech with derogatory words, including fags, nips, bitches, and cunts.
He emptied a wastepaper basket over a reporter’s head.
He would let the friends he made as a studio executive -- Robert Evans, Mike Ovitz, Harvey Weinstein, etc. – preview ‘Variety’ articles mentioning them and incorporated their suggested edits.
When reporters complained about changes to their stories, he replied, ‘This is my paper. I’ll do as I please.’
When Paramount threatened to pull its advertising from ‘Variety’ after film critic Joe McBride wrote a negative review of ‘Patriot Games,’ he banned McBride from reviewing the studio’s films (1990).
A studio executive called him ‘the most hated man in Hollywood.’

Why he might not be annoying:

While at Paramount, he purchased the film rights to ‘The Godfather’ and suggested that Francis Ford Coppola direct.
He also convinced a reluctant Coppola to return for ‘The Godfather Part II.’
Sherry Lansing noted about his influence, ‘Peter has the power to affect the way people think.’
He said, ‘I have a certain fondness for that epoch when movies were made because of a director’s passion, not because McDonalds or a toy company or German financiers were interested.’
