    He openly told Srpska leaders Radovan Karadzic and Momcilo Krajisnik that their plans to unify Serb territory could not be accomplished without genocide.
    He commanded the troops that perpetrated the Srebenica massacre in which 8,300 Bosnian Muslims were murdered (July 11-13, 1995).
    Before the massacre, he told soldiers 'There will be blood up to your knees.'
    His defense against charges that his soldiers engaged in the systematic rape of Muslim women: 'We Serbs are too picky.'
    Despite the war crimes indictment, he lived openly in Belgrade until the arrest of Slobodan Milosevic.
    He continued to be protected by Serbian security forces after he went underground.
    His father died leading a partisan attack against Fascist leader Ante Pavelic.
    Unlike most of Srpska's political leaders, he led an ascetic lifestyle.
    He hated war profiteers.
    His daughter Ana committed suicide using his handgun at age 23 (1994).
    One of his former commanders told Newsweek, 'Some people think he went mad. Mladić’s life had two phases – before and after the death of Ana. He never recovered.'
