Enlisted as a private in the Southern army (1861)
Confederate cavalry general at the Battle of Shiloh (April 1862)
Participated in the Battle of Chickamauga (1863)
One of the founders of the Ku Klux Klan (1866)

Why he might be annoying:

He fought against the Union during the Civil War.
He was a white supremacist.
He was a slave owner.
He was one of the first leaders of the Ku Klux Klan which oversaw the murder and terrorizing of hundreds of innocent blacks.
Jefferson Davis gave his funeral oration (1877).
When black Union soldiers refused to surrender at the Battle of Fort Pillow, they were slaughtered.

Why he might not be annoying:

Five of his siblings died of sickness.
He had not lost a battle during the war until his last one, the Battle of Selma.
He became known as a master tactician and was respected by Union generals.
He is considered a hero in the South.
He lost most of his fortune when the south fell and gave the majority of the remainder to returning soldiers.
Although a proponent of White Supremacy he thought of blacks as valuable property and became disgusted with the KKK's wholesale killing of them. He resigned as grand wizard and ordered the KKK to disband (1869).
