    Born in Denbigh, Wales, United Kingdom
    Birth name was John Rowlands
    Correspondent for the ‘New York Herald Tribune'
    Best known for his search for Dr. Livingstone
    Wrote ‘Through the Dark Continent' (1878) and ‘In Darkest Africa' (1880)
    He fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. After being captured, he changed sides and fought for the Union.
    While exploring the Congo River, he persuaded native leaders to sign treaties placing their lands under the protection of King Leopold II of Belgium. Leopold would proceed to enslave the people of the Congo, killing millions.
    He wrote ‘the savage only respects force, power, boldness and decision.'
    When he found Livingstone, he uttered the famous words, ‘Dr. Livingstone, I presume?'
    Why he was searching for Livingstone, his fiancée married someone else.
    He then fell in love with an American heiress who married someone else while he was exploring the Congo.
