Why they might be annoying:

Their earlier material was loaded with violent and gorey imagery and lyrics.
Song titles include 'Exhume to Consume,' 'Crepitating Bowel Erosion,' 'Vomited Anal Tract,' 'Genital Grinder,' and many more.
Many believe these early lyrics were actually intended to push vegetarianism.
Mike Amott left the group after recording 'Heartwork' (1992).
Many fans dislike their later material, claiming it to be 'too mainstream sounding.'
They had two lead vocalists, both of which sung in the typical low, guttural death metal style.
Their first two albums were banned due to the graphic cover art, which was eventually changed.
Their early material has inspired countless ripoff bands over the years, most of which are terrible.

Why they might not be annoying:

They proved to be an important and influential death metal act.
Unlike other well-known acts, such as Cannibal Corpse, they constantly reinvented their sound, changing from the grindcore of their early days to their more melodic-death style.
Their lyrical focus eventually changed from violence and gore, to social and political issues.
They paid tribute to Neil Young, with their song title 'Keep on Rotting in the Free World.'
'Heartwork' is considered a classic death metal release, and the birth of the 'melodic death' style.
Mike Amott is now a member of Arch Enemy, considered one of the top death metal acts today.
