Why he might be annoying:

At 14, he was sent to a reformatory for robbery and assault.
While in the Army, he was court martialed five times before being discharged as 'unfit for military service.'
As an adult, he was again convicted of robbery and assault (1957) and spent four years in prison.
Although his supporters claim he was a victim of racism, the jury that convicted him in 1976 included two black members.
Three witnesses who provided him with an alibi at the 1967 trial recanted their testimony in 1976.
Former supporter Carolyn Kelley claimed that he beat her (1976).

Why he might not be annoying:

The two main eyewitnesses were career criminals who recanted their testimony, then recanted their recantation.
He lost the vision in his right eye after being punched by another prisoner in the mess hall.
He said, 'There is no bitterness. If I was bitter, that would mean they won.'
