First woman (sixth overall) to swim the English Channel (August 6, 1926)

Why she might be annoying:

She boasted 'People said women couldn't swim the Channel, but I proved they could.'
Crossing the English Channel had a detrimental effect on her hearing. By 1928, she was partially deaf.

Why she might not be annoying:

New York City Mayor James J. Walker ordered a ticker tape parade in her honor. He compared her crossing the English Channel to Moses parting the Red Sea, Caesar crossing the Rubicon and Washington crossing the Delaware.
Two million attended her ticker tape parade.
It took her only 14 hours, 31 minutes to cross the 21 mile channel (the fastest man at that point took over 16½ hours).
She spent much of her life teaching deaf kids to swim.
She was selected #42 by Sports Illustrated for Women's Century's Greatest Sportswomen.
She lived to 97.
