    (November 10, 1911- )
    Born in Chicago, Illinois
    Nickname was The Candy Lady
Heiress to the E. J. Brach & Sons Candy Company family fortune
Husband Frank died in 1970 leaving her sole possession of a $20 million fortune
Endowed the Helen V. Brach Foundation to help finance animal rights groups (1974)
    Disappeared after a Mayo Clinic check-up (February 17, 1977)
    Declared legally dead May 1984
She went from a coat check girl to millionaire by marrying into money.
Though she was an animal rights activist, especially dogs, she wore fur coats.
She believed in automatic writing - she would enter a trance-state and her hand was guided to write words as told by spiritual forces, using results for guidance.
She bought racehorses from crooked dealers that were next to worthless, then once realizing she'd been swindled loudly stated she would talk to the district attorney's office.
She never got the chance as she didn't make it home from the Mayo Clinic, where foul play has always been suspected but never proven.
She was a bit eccentric but not a spendthrift and gave sizable donations to charitable causes.
She donated so much money to the Lincoln Park Zoo they name a primate house in her honor.
Richard Bailey, suspected in helping 'silence her' but not considered the actual murderer, nonetheless received a 30-year sentence for racketeering and conspiracy in the case.
In 2005 a witness claimed to have fired his gun into the horse blanket her battered body was wrapped in, then taken to a blast furnace and thrown in.
The $500,000 pink marble mausoleum she had built in Ohio where her husband and dogs Candy and Sugar are buried will most likely never contain her remains.
