Entrepreneur
    (May 30, 1846-September 24, 1920)
Born in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation
    Goldsmith and jeweler
    Headed the House of Faberge
Known for Faberge eggs, especially the 50 large ones made for the Russian czars
Despite his name being associated with Faberge eggs, most were actually made by hired craftsmen.
For that matter, many of the designs were created by his younger brother, Agathon.
He would take a hammer to works that displeased him.
When the Russian Revolution hit, he headed for exile on a diplomatic train while his wife and eldest son got stuck fleeing for Finland on a sleigh.
Unless you are obscenely rich, you ain't getting your mitts on anything he created. (Noted Faberge collectors included Armand Hammer, Malcolm Forbes and cereal heiress Marjorie Merriwether Post.)
He used the finest materials and hired the most talented craftsmen.
The first Imperial Faberge egg so pleased Alexander III that the czar gave him carte blanche on future designs.
He was named a knight of the Legion of Honor after exhibiting at the Paris World's Fair (1900).
According to family tradition, he died of a broken heart after the Communists nationalized the House of Faberge.
