First pitcher to win 200 games without a single 20-win season
16th pitcher to strike out three batters on nine pitches in an inning (4th inning against the Montreal Expos on September 24, 1971)
Retired in 1974 ranked 20th all time amongst pitchers in hitting homers (20)
Why he might be annoying
He claims to have let Roger Maris hit his 59th home run in 1961 by telling him he would throw nothing but fastballs.
He was angered that commissioner Ford Frick put an 'asterisk' on the Maris record.
He felt Joe Nuxhall had a personal vendetta against him while both were pitching for the Reds.
In the 1988 movie 'Bull Durham' Susan Sarandon's character says, 'Bad trades are a part of baseball; I mean who can forget Milt Pappas for Frank Robinson for gosh sakes.'
Though aware of his talent, Cubs manager Leo Durocher considered him an ingrate and cancer on the team.
Why he might not be annoying
He was scouted and signed by the Orioles at the suggestion of Hall of Fame pitcher Hal Newhouser.
He came within one out of a perfect game, walking the 27th batter on questionable calls by the home plate ump.
Other than less strikeouts his statistics are hauntingly similar to baseball Hall of Famer Don Drysdale.
He had just three losing seasons his entire career.
He was a control pitcher who never walked more than 83 batters in a season.
His wife disappeared on her way to the dentist in 1982 and was found murdered in a shallow pond five years later.
