Why he might be annoying:

One critic wrote, 'He made up in pretension what he lacked in personal charm.'
A profile of him by Wollcott Gibbs in 'The New Yorker' parodied the eccentric style he used in 'Time': 'Backwards ran sentences until reeled the mind.'
He used 'Time' to promote Republican candidates, with former editor T.S. Matthews claiming, 'The Presidential election of 1940 was the last one that Time even tried to report fairly.'
    He chain smoked.
He tried LSD once and talked to God under its influence.

Why he might not be annoying:

The son of Christian missionaries in China, he learned Chinese before he learned English.
He was voted 'most brilliant' in his class at Yale.
He coined the phrase 'the American century' to describe the United States dominance of the 20th century.
He left most of his $100 million fortune to the charitable Henry Luce Foundation.
The New York Times credited him with having 'created the modern news magazine.'
