Why Albany, New York might be annoying
Two forts were established to protect the fledgling settlement from being devoured by the Canadians and Indians, both named after the Dutch (Fort Nassau and Fort Orange).
All the fur trading cut into the revenue of the natives and they seriously considered destroying it.
The original settlement in the area by the natives was called 'Penpotawotnot.'
It is called 'SmAlbany' by clever young lads fed up with its lack of opportunities.
It is easily dwarfed in size by New York City even though it is the capital of New York.
Mayor Erastus Corning II ruled over it for an obscene amount of time (1942-1983).
New York City is considered the capital of the world (because of the U.N. headquarters), yet Albany is still the state capital.
A large portion of their population is under the age of 18.
A customer was arrested at the Crossgates Mall for wearing a 'Say NO to the war in Iraq' T-shirt. The charges were later dropped (2003).
Why Albany, New York might not be annoying
It was here that Benjamin Franklin proposed the 'Albany Plan of Union,' seen as a predecessor to the U.S. Constitution.
It is closer to the interests of the rest of New York, apart from New York City.
It was strategically located on the Hudson River.
President Chester Arthur is buried nearby.
The New York State Capitol Building, a $25 million building designed by three architects, is located here.
It has several schools and universities.
Andy Rooney was born here.
