    Recorded the singles 'You Got My Mind Messed Up' (1966), 'Pouring Water on a Drowning Man' (1966) and 'The Dark End of the Street' (1967)
    He never learned to read or write.
    His producer Quinton Claunch said, 'His first priority was a marijuana cigarette, a drink, or a woman. That would take precedence over his music.'
    He was bipolar.
    He would sometimes lapse into a near-catatonic state.
    He spent the 1980s shuttling between living in his sister's apartment and institutions.
    He began performing with gospel groups at age nine.
    He had a powerful baritone voice.
    One critic wrote, 'Speaking strictly about talent and ability, James Carr was easily the equal of James Brown and Otis Redding or anyone else you'd care to mention.'
