Won the Nobel Prize in Literature (1930)

Why he might be annoying:

He started as a ghostwriter, supplying plots for Jack London.
He won the Pulitzer Prize for 'Arrowsmith' but rejected it.
James Thurber said of his drinking, 'You couldn't always tell at seven in the morning whether he was having his first drink of the day or his last one of the night.'
His wife said, 'Even in life he was fully alive only in his writing.'

He was the first American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
He exposed hypocritical evangelists in 'Elmer Gantry.'
