Auto Racer

The Resume

    (January 3, 1932-August 14, 2005)
    Born in Columbia, Tennessee
    Birth name was Clifton Marlin
Four-time track champion at the Nashville Speedway (1959,1962,1966-67)
    NASCAR driver (1966-80)
51 top ten finishes in Winston Cup events
    Father of driver Sterling Marlin

Why he might be annoying:

He ran his first race in a car he 'borrowed' from his older brother Jack (and using a driver's license borrowed from one of his cousins).
He never won a NASCAR points race.
He called drivers with sponsors, like Richard Petty 'hot dogs.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was burned in a crash at the Nashville Fairgrounds, but competed the next week, heavily bandaged and driving a backup car.
He was an early fan favorite, because he made himself available for autographs and photos after races.
He was an independent, mostly self-financed driver, who had to sell a cow to raise the money to buy tires for a race.
Fellow driver Richard Childress said, 'I'll tell you, he lived life every day having a ball.'
