Why they might be annoying:

They used to use fake English accents in interviews.
They, maybe more than any other band ever, have been declared sell outs by the people that formerly supported them, because of the fact that they broke the cardinal 'rule' of punk music - signing to a major label.
They've inspired several anti-Green Day sites online.
'Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)' has been one of the most overplayed songs ever. It's been played at proms, weddings, funerals, sporting events, among other things.
They used to be called the Susan Lucci of the MTV VMAs, since they had been nominated many times, and didn't win until 1998.

Why they might not be annoying:

Before signing to a major label, they organized their own tours and sold 70,000 copies of their independent record without managers or agents.
They gave arguably the most memorable performance of Woodstock '94, by getting the crowd to throw mud at them and causing a near riot onstage.
'Dookie' has been called one of the most influential albums of all time.
They defend themselves from being called sell outs by reasonably arguing that classic punk bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols were also on major labels.
All three members overcame traumatic childhoods to reach great success.
They have musically inspired many other bands, such as Blink 182, Sum 41, and New Found Glory.
