    Novels included 'Last Bus to Woodstock' (1975), 'The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn' (1977), 'The Riddle of the Third Mile' (1983), 'The Wench Is Dead' (1989), 'The Daughters of Cain' (1994) and 'The Remorseful Day' (1999)
    Novels served as the basis for the TV series 'Inspector Morse' (1987-2000)
    Named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to literature (2000)

Why he might be annoying:

    The names of Inspector Morse and all but one of the killers in his novels were based on winners of the Observer Azed crossword contest.
    He kept Inspector Morse's first name a secret until the penultimate novel, where he revealed it to be Endeavour.
    About a third of the quotes he used as chapter headings were made up by him.
    He made cameo appearances in most episodes of the 'Inspector Morse' TV series.
    He planned to write the definitive A.E. Housman biography when he finished with the Inspector Morse novels, but someone else beat him to it.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was married to Dorothy Cooper for just short of 61 years.
    He was a teacher until he began going deaf in the mid-1960s and said, 'I Think teaching is truly more satisfying than writing.'
    He won six national crossword competitions.
    He lived modestly despite earning millions from the Morse books and TV series.
    He decided to stop writing Morse novels when 'I felt I was running out of potential ideas.'
