Why he might be annoying
He worked in construction and oil drilling before deciding he wanted a Hollywood lifestyle.
John Wayne wanted him to direct his last film, 'The Shootist,' but he didn't want to see his hero die on film and refused.
He made 'Another 48 Hrs.,' which tanked, strictly for the money.
He incorporates certain names, places and things into different movies, such as a person named Luther, a sky blue Cadillac convertible and a bar named Torchy's.
He is so into Westerns he has some characters in his non-Western films find the need to wear a cowboy hat within the story.
When studio execs called Francis Ford Coppola to re-edit his 2000 film 'Supernova,' he insisted his name be taken off the credits (the alias 'Thomas Lee' was used).
Why he might not be annoying
His Westerns pay homage to directors he idolizes, such as John Ford and Sam Peckinpah.
He has written or co-written many of the storylines for the movies he's directed.
When honchos asked him to do prologue narration for the 25th anniversary re-release of 'The Warriors' he said 'no' countless times until they wore him down, saying, 'Fuck it, I'll try it.'
His '48 Hrs.' was a smash hit, ushered in the 'buddy movie' era and helped make a superstar of Eddie Murphy.
He directed the pilot episode of HBO's Western series 'Deadwood' and earned an Emmy for it.
He's well liked and respected among his peers and has been 'thanked' in film credits for 'Grand Canyon (1991)' and 'A Few Good Men (1992).'
