    Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Palestine (1935-48)
    First Prime Minister of Israel (1948-53,1955-63)
    He was expelled from Palestine for his political activities (1915).
    He initially approved Menachim Begin’s plan for the bombing of the King David Hotel, which killed 91 people (July 22, 1946)
    He controversially ordered Israeli forces to fire on the Altalena, a ship carrying arms for a Jewish paramilitary group (June 20, 1948).
    He ordered the expulsion of thousands of Palestinians from their homes during the Israeli war of independence.
    He fought with the British Army’s Jewish Legion in World War I.
    When he realized the risks of mass killing in the King David Hotel bombing, he told Begin to call off the operation.
    After the Six-Day War (1967), he recommended returning most of the occupied territory.
    He said, ‘In Israel, in order to be a realist you must believe in miracles.’
