Two words: 'Courtney Love.'
Their songs were often unintelligible, and those that were intelligible were often depressing or disturbing.
They had limited musical skills.
Their second studio album wasn't nearly as successful as their first.
While performing drunk at the MTV Music Awards, Krist Novoselic threw his guitar up in the air and it came down on his face. Kurt Cobain came up to him (not knowing what just happened) and physically kicked Krist in the ass.
They broke up after Cobain's death by suicide.

They were the first Seattle grunge band to have mainstream success.
Several of their songs became instant classics.
Their success destroyed the hair band trend which once dominated rock radio.
