    On several occasions he had voted against bills he previously voted for (senile?).

    He was the first write-in candidate to be elected senator (1954).
    He graduated Clemson University (1923).
    He fought during WW II.
    He was said to be for the common man.
    He retired at the end of this congressional session (December, 2002).
