    He usually sported one of two outfits: safari jacket over a polo shirt (Summer Olympics) or beige sports coat over a turtleneck (Winter Olympics).
    He was big on mixing sappy human interest stories in with the sports.
    He said Olympics coverage should be 'two weeks of fluff.'
    He made a promotional film to help Beijing land the Olympics that ignored China's record of human rights abuses.

    He served with Army intelligence during World War II.
    He overcame a lisp to become a successful radio sportscaster.
    The Washington Post called '16 Days of Glory/Los Angeles' 'the single-most inspiring sports film ever created.'
    He often found compelling stories among the lesser-known athletes, commenting 'Sometimes the essence of the Olympic Games can be found in people who don’t stand on the victory podium.'
