Mistress
The Resume
(April 29, 1869-September 11, 1947)
Born in Woolwich, England, United Kingdom
Birth name was Alice Edmonstone
Married Lieutenant-Colonel George Keppel
Mistress of King Edward VII
Great-grandmother of Camilla Parker-Bowles
Why she might be annoying
She rose in society by sleeping with prominent men.
Her eldest daughter may have been fathered by her lover, Baron Grimthorpe, instead of her husband.
She annoyed Edward's wife, Alexandra of Denmark, by indiscreetly showing up at the same social functions as the king and queen.
Although Alexandra allowed her to visit Edward on his deathbed, once the king lost consciousness, Alexandra told the attending physician 'Get that woman away.'
Camilla Parker-Bowles broke the ice at her first meeting with Prince Charles by noting that her great-grandmother had slept with his great-great-grandfather.
Why she might not be annoying
She was one of the few people in Edward's inner circle who could soothe the king's mood swings.
Biographer Christopher Wilson claimed, 'Alice Keppel was a fantastic help to Edward VII, more help than his wife Queen Alexandra could ever have been.'
When Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry Wallis Warfield Simpson, she observed 'Things were done much better in my day.'
