Football Coach
    (October 25, 1961- )
    Born in Everett, Massachusetts
Head football coach at Grand Valley State University (1991-2003), Central Michigan University (2004-06), University of Cincinnati (2006-09) and Notre Dame
Two-time Division II Coach of the Year (2002-03)
Associated Press College Football Coach of the Year (2012)
He left both Central Michigan and Cincinnati on the eve of post-season bowl games to sign with a new university.
He decided to hold practice outside on a day with wind gusts over 50 mph, resulting in the death of 20-year-old videographer Declan Sullivan, who was killed when the lift he was taping from blew over (October 27, 2010).
The National Catholic Register suggested he should be fired over his obscenity-filled sideline tirades directed against his players (2011).
In 2014, Notre Dame paid him $1.62 million; the same year, they paid his fired predecessor, Charlie Weis, $2.14 million.
As of the end of the 2015 season, he had a winning record in 24 of 25 years as a head coach.
He was the first head coach to take Notre Dame to bowl games in each of his first six seasons at the helm.
Mysteriously, the complaints about his temper and language almost completely vanished after he led Notre Dame to a 12-0 regular season record and a spot in the BCS title game (2012).
Former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz commented about the pressure placed on Kelly, ‘At some colleges, they give you three or four years to build a program. At Notre Dame, they give you three quarters, maximum.’
