She is Chile's first female president.
Her father opposed Augusto Pinochet's regime and was tortured until he died the year after that (1973).
After her father's death, both she and her mother were tortured until they were exiled to Australia.
Despite her socialist ideology, she is generally a moderate and allows free market policies in Chile.
She worked to improve the lives of Chile's poor, prison reform, women's rights, and the rights of Chile's indigenous Mapuche people.
She was the first Latin American female minister of defense.
As minister of defense, she made sure that the military would never eliminate democracy in Chile by reconciling the military and victims of the Pinochet regime.
She led a rescue operation during a flood in northern Santiago, which brought her to the presidency.
She can speak English, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and French.
