U.S. Congressman
The Resume
(June 17, 1932- )
US Representative from Pennsylvania (1974- )
Democrat
Why he might be annoying
He won his first election to the House by a mere 122 vote margin.
He is called a DINO (Democrat In Name Only) for his stands against gun control and abortion.
He was a war hawk who completely reversed (Bush might say 'flip-flopped') his Iraqi War position.
The original language in his declaration was that it was 'time to bring [the troops] home.'
He later clarified that 'bring them home' meant re-deploy them somewhere else in the area.
Almost all the members of his own party, including John Kerry and Hillary Clinton, disagreed with him.
Some said his call for an exit strategy strengthened the enemy.
He looks like a jowlier Andy Rooney.
Why he might not be annoying
He is a former marine.
He fought with distinction in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
He earned the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
He was the first Vietnam veteran to be elected to the House of Representatives.
His name was raked through the mud for no real reason by Republicans.
In an act of sad desperation, Press Secretary Scott McClellan compared him to Michael Moore for seeking an end to the Iraqi War.
Unlike his political opponents, he does not get personal and knows his facts.
He genuinely cares for the troops and doesn't use them as a political bludgeon.
Ohio Representative Jean Schmidt was booed after calling him a coward on the House floor (and how many purple hearts did she earn?).
He supported the first Gulf War and was a close friend of George H.W. Bush.
He usually is re-elected by a landslide.
