Comedian

The Resume

    (February 20, 1984- )
Born in Soweto (Johannesburg, Gauteng), South Africa
South African political satirist, comedian, writer, producer, and actor
Known for 'Trevor Noah: African American' (2013), 'Trevor Noah: The Daywalker' (2009), and 'Trevor Noah: Crazy Normal' (2011)
Hosted South African TV shows, 'Tonight with Trevor Noah,' 'The Real Goboza,' 'Siyadlala,' 'The Amazing Date,' and 'The Axe Sweet Life'
Stand-up comedy specials in South Africa included 'The Daywalker' (2009), 'Crazy Normal' (2011), 'That's Racist' (2012), 'That's Racist' (2013), and 'It's My Culture' (2013)
Correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, debuting with the 'Spot of Africa' segments
Announced as the successor host for The Daily Show, following the departure of Jon Stewart (Mar. 2015)
Subject of David Paul Meyer's documentary film, 'You Laugh But It's True' (2009)

Why he might be annoying:

He started out in a South African soap opera.
He titled his Gauteng YFM radio show, 'Noah's Ark' (cute).
One of his first hosting gigs was headlining South Africa's answer to Dancing With the Stars, 'Strictly Come Dancing' in 2008.
His relative anonymity was so strong that he was initially confused with the other black Daily Show correspondent.
He was selected for the Daily Show host gig with only three 'Daily Show' segments to his credit.
It was revealed that he was the fourth choice for the hosting position, after Amy Poehler, Amy Schumer, and Louis C.K. reportedly passed.
He was accused of being an anti-Semite and a misogynist after several of his tweets drew scrutiny.
He tends to play fast and loose with the race card in his comic routines, e.g. titling his 2012 one-man show at the Edinburg Fringe 'The Racist.'
His deal with Will and Jada Smith for a half-hour FOX sitcom on his life growing up in Soweto fell through in 2013.
He took a swipe at the American police force when he said 'I never thought I’d be more afraid of police in America than in South Africa... it kind of makes me a little nostalgic for the old days, back home' (as in the days of Apartheid... yeah)

Why he might not be annoying:

He is by far the most successful comedian in South Africa, but his mother vocally disapproves of his success.
Accusations of anti-Semitism may be misplaced, as his mother was also allegedly half-Jewish.
He became the first African comedian to ever perform on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
He was nominated for Personality of the Year at the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards.
He is fluent in English, German, Xhosa, Zulu, Sotho and Afrikaans.
He was the child of an interracial marriage between an African Xhosan woman and a Swiss-German man, during Apartheid when it was illegal (his mother was jailed and fined by the government).
He utilizes his experiences growing up in a Soweto township during Apartheid for is comedy routines.
His former stepfather abused and shot his mother, also threatening to shoot Noah as well before being convicted and jailed for attempted murder.
When the news of his selection broke, he tweeted 'No-one can replace Jon Stewart. But together with the amazing team at The Daily Show, we will continue to make this the best damn news show!' (Mar. 30, 2015)
