The Resume

Why he might be annoying:

He said, ‘I was probably impossible as a child…. As soon as I tasted things like foie gras, I demanded it – screamed and yelled if I didn’t get it.’
He began smoking at age fifteen – complete with cigarette holder.
He turned down a gift from Andy Warhol of an original Campbell’s soup can painting, saying he had no place to put it. (‘It would be worth a hundred million dollars today.’)
He was an inveterate name dropper.
He became famous selling fake jewelry to rich people.
He became a twice-a-month mainstay on QVC.

Why he might not be annoying:

He managed to make fake jewelry not just acceptable, but chic.
His motto: ‘Fake jewels, real glamour.’
Several clients, like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, hired him to copy their real jewelry so they could wear the fakes in public and keep the originals in safety.
In the mid-60s fashion reporter Marilyn Bender commented, ‘The most important men in a fashionable woman’s life are her hairdresser, her makeup artist, and Kenneth Jay Lane.’
He was witty and a dapper dresser.
As ‘the perfect extra man’ for parties, he was invited to Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball (1966).
He won a special Coty Award (1966) and the Nieman Marcus Fashion Award (1968).
