Religious Figure

The Resume

    (December 5, 1443-February 21, 1513)
Birth name was Giuliano della Rovere
Nicknamed 'The Terrible' and 'The Warrior Pope'
    Nephew of Pope Sixtus IV
    Bishop of Carpentras, France (1471)
    Archbishop of Avignon, France (1474)
    Papal legate in France (1480)
    Cardinal of Ostia, Italy (1484)
    217th Pope (1503)

Why he might be annoying:

Rather than a religious, moral figure, he was a ruthless politician and warmonger.
    He fathered three illegitimate daughters.
He first lost the papal election to a Borgia (1492).
To try and depose him, he had France march against Rome, but could not get rid of his adversary.
Corruption later won him the Papal seat.
To restore his authority on the Church States, damaged by the Venetian Republic, he allied with France, Germany and Spain.
Venice was defeated, but the French occupied the country and plotted against him.
He thus joined forces with Venice, without much result.
By threats of excommunication, he then managed to gather various countries in a 'Holy League' to chase the French away - it paid off.
But the allies wouldn't leave. Dissensions arose, and Venice switched sides again. He had failed to achieve his purpose: the independence and unification of Italy.
Two months after his death, France successfully invaded North Italy.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is one of the most prominent popes.
His statecraft made the papacy the first power of the Italian peninsula.
However, it is as a patron of the arts that he is mainly remembered.
He notably befriended and protected Bramante, Raphael and Michelangelo.
Several Renaissance masterpieces are associated to his name.
He launched the construction of St. Peter's Basilica, the largest church in Christendom until 1989.
He commissioned Michelangelo to sculpt his mausoleum and paint the famous ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
He created the picturesque Vatican Swiss Guard.
