Why he might be annoying:

For such an influential director, he's largely forgotten today.
He divorced three times.
He was quite a womanizer even when married, leading to John Ford calling him 'The Grey Fox of Hollywood.'
He often exaggerated his involvement in his films, making the jobs of film historians very difficult.
A controversy exists over whether he or the credited Christian Nyby directed 'The Thing From Another World.'

Why he might not be annoying:

His directing style was to be a pure storyteller, only using fancy camera tricks when they served the story.
His films were uplifting stories of people succeeding by coming together.
He made films in just about every genre.
He said: 'There's action only if there is danger.'
He was noted for the realistic speaking styles in his films.
He received a Lifetime Achievement Oscar in 1974.
He was a pilot and a race car driver.
