Why he might be annoying
He got separated from his first wife, whom he had two children with.
He opposes the War on Terror, claiming that it engineers the reduction of civil liberties.
Why he might not be annoying
He criticizes the appalling human rights record of Uzbekistan, including boiling people to death.
He denounces dictatorships and hesitates establishing diplomatic relations with them.
As a result of his hostile stance towards the Uzbek government, he got sacked.
At the age of 43, he was the youngest British ambassador when appointed.
His advocacy for human rights earned him the Sam Adams Award for Integrity in Intelligence (January 2006)
He also won the Premio Alta Qualità della Città di Bologna (November 2006).
