Aviator
    (November 22, 1898-August 15, 1935)
    Born in Grand Saline, Texas
    First pilot to fly solo around the world (July 14-22, 1933)
    Died in a plane crash outside Point Barrow, Alaska
    Received the Distinguished Flying Cross (1932)
    Inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame (1969)
    He started as a parachutist in a flying circus.
    He named his plane 'Winnie Mae' after the daughter of his main financial backer.
    His fatal plane crash also took out comedian Will Rogers.
    Although they died in a plane crash, he and Rogers both had airports in Oklahoma named after them.
    He lost his left eye in a drilling accident in an Oklahoma oil field.
    He used the settlement money to buy his first plane.
    He developed the first practical pressure suit.
    During a high-altitude flight, he discovered the jet stream.
    He is one of the few individuals to have been honored by New York City with a ticker tape parade twice (1931,1933).
