Why Cannes, France might be annoying
It was the site of a bloody battle between two for Roman emperor (AD 69).
It suffered repeated bouts of the plague from the 14th to 16th centuries.
The first Cannes Film Festival started September 1, 1939, and ended prematurely the next day thanks to World War II starting.
The Encyclopedia of Movie Awards said Cannes 'is to the movies what a convention in Vegas is to any other industry: a gaudy, giddy orgy of self-promotion, wheeler-dealing and public drunkenness - only with foreign films thrown in.'
Schizophrenically, the festival almost always features the highly-touted premier of a Hollywood blockbuster that does not have a chance in hell of winning any of the awards that will be given.
Is it pronounced 'can' or 'khan' or 'cans' or what?
Why Cannes, France might not be annoying
It has a mild Mediterranean climate.
It became a leading resort for Europe's elite after England's Lord Brougham was unable to reach Nice due to a cholera outbreak, stopped short in Cannes and found the locale so charming he had a chateau built (1834).
Grace Kelly met Prince Rainier at the 1955 Film Festival; next year Cannes was held early so Festival goers could also attend their wedding.
Appropriately for a city associated with movie glamour, its American sister city is Beverly Hills.
