Why he might be annoying
He was a Communist.
He harassed his country's Turkish and Muslim minorities by trying to assimilate them into Bulgarian society (1972-1974, 1984-1985).
He clamped down on dissent and had thousands imprisoned.
He collectivized his country's agriculture, forbidding peasants to grow food for themselves.
He was convicted for corruption charges, including embezzlement, and sentenced to prison for seven years (1992).
He was highly loyal to the Soviet Union.
Why he might not be annoying
His parents were poor peasants.
He joined the resistance against the Nazis.
He created one of the most successful economies within the Soviet Bloc.
His country accent made him the butt of jokes among urban Bulgarians.
He died of pneumonia.
