Why he might be annoying
He turned down the office of the Vice President when offered by James Garfield and instead took a position as the Minister to France.
He later accepted the vice presidency when offered by Benjamin Harrison.
His political opportunities came through the influence of his wealth, as he was one of the nation's wealthiest and most influential bankers.
He was better managing his finances than he was at politics.
He was supported by Ulysses S. Grant and Senator Roscoe Conkling during the most corrupt stages of their political careers.
He did not help break the filibusters that destroyed a bill to allow blacks to vote.
Why he might not be annoying
He was a clerk in a general store who entered the dry-goods business.
He opposed J.P. Morgan, his principle banking rival, and his company was merged into Morgan's, thus eliminating his name from banking.
He won the vice presidency in a 5 to 1 margin.
He was said to have a 'lovable personality.'
He was dumped from the Harrison ticket in support of another New Yorker.
He promoted the family life and religious values in a time of corruption and greed.
