They are owned by the Yomiuri Media conglomerate, and so have loads of money for buying the best players in Japan.
During V-9 (victory nine: winning nine Japan Series Games in a row), Yomiuri shamelessly promoted the Giants in it's newspapers and on it's television station.
If the team performs badly, foreign players are often blamed.
One of their best players (Shigeo Nagashima) proved to be the worst manager in their history.

They won more games than any other professional team in Japan.
They give die-hard fans of the Hanshin Tigers and the Hiroshima Carp someone to hate.
