Why he might be annoying:

He served as a pilot on an English blockade runner during the Civil War. When the ship was boarded, he ignored the advice of the British officers to don one of their uniforms and pretend to be one of them, and was captured.
He rarely held a steady job, working as a hotel clerk, a bookkeeper, a lawyer (despite not having a law degree) and several stints as a teacher.
He wrote a travelogue about India despite never visiting the country.
The statue honoring him at Duke University makes him look considerably older than his actual age of 39.

Why he might not be annoying:

He graduated first in his class from Oglethorpe University.
While being held in a POW camp, he contracted tuberculosis which plagued him for the rest of his life.
He was a talented musician and played the flute for the Peabody Orchestra in Baltimore.
His poetic style, which anticipated modern free verse, was admired by Longfellow.
