Born in Antwerp, Belgium
Baroque artist
Court painter for King Charles I of England
Why he might be annoying
During a sojourn in Italy, he irritated the bohemian artists of Rome by dressing as a dandy in 'silks, a hat with feathers and broaches, gold chains across his chest.'
He was so in demand as a portraitist that he set up an assembly line system where his assistants painted the costumes and he painted the heads.
He had a daughter out of wedlock.
He gave his name to a style of beard.
Why he might not be annoying
He was an accomplished painter in his teens.
Peter Paul Rubens called him 'the best of my pupils.'
King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria came to his studios so often that a special causeway was built for their use.
Despite being Charles' favorite painter, the king failed to pay his 200-pound annual pension for five straight years.
