Why he might be annoying:

His speaking and writing style is reminiscent of George Will's prissiness.
He criticizes, dismisses, and even ridicules Saint Francis of Assisi.
He really needs to get a new haircut.
He is, on occasion very critical of Pope Francis, which is surprising since he presents himself as an orthodox Catholic.
His book about Pope Benedict and his future effect on the Catholic Church was rendered moot/irrelevant/anachronistic by Benedict's early retirement.
He rarely writes about anything outside his rather narrow field of interest; that being the Catholic Church in the late Twentieth Century.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He is borderline brilliant!
He is an exceptional writer and presents even relatively technical matters of morality, theology, and history in such an accessible way that you can almost see his mind at work.
His historical wrings are respected even among ideological opponents.
He's been married forever and has never had any type of scandal attached to his name.
He's a conservative but excellent dresser.
He keeps his private life, well private. Not even his exact birth date is public knowledge.
