Why Taliban might be annoying
It forbade women to attend school, work outside the home or be treated by male doctors.
It banned many pastimes, including music, movies, fireworks, chess and kite flying.
It massacred thousands of civilians.
It banned elections.
It blew up two giant 'idolatrous' statues of the Buddha.
It forced Afghani Hindus to wear distinctive badges.
It executed homosexuals by throwing them from towers or crushing them beneath walls.
It refused to hand over Osama bin Laden after 9/11.
Why Taliban might not be annoying
Its name translates as the innocuous sounding 'students.'
It took control of Afghanistan with little bloodshed.
At first it was supported by many Afghanis who hoped it would bring stability.
When it was in power, most of the world refused to diplomatically recognize it.
The CIA helped arm the Taliban’s predecessors in their fight against the Soviets.
It banned opium production in 2001.
It encourages Muslims to live as Muhammad and his followers did.
It may have offered to turn over bin Laden to Pakistan provided he was tried under Sharia law.
