The Resume

    (October 18, 1918-February 7, 1999)
    Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Birth name was Robert William Troup, Jr.
Best known for his portrayal as Dr. Joe Early on the NBC TV series 'Emergency' (1972-77)
Acted in the films 'Bop Girl Goes Calypso (1957),' 'The High Cost of Loving (1958),' 'The Gene Krupa Story (1959),' 'First to Fight (1967)' and 'M*A*S*H (1970)'
    Jazz pianist and singer-songwriter
Wrote the songs '(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66,' 'Daddy,' 'Snootie Little Cutie,' 'The Girl Can't Help It,' 'Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring,' 'The Meaning of the Blues,' 'The Three Bears' and 'Let's Keep Dancing'
Married to 'Emergency' co-star Julie London (1959-99)
Died of a heart attack in Sherman Oaks, CA at age 80

Why he might be annoying:

He divorced his first wife and mother of his first two kids.
While he was considered an accomplished songwriter, his own recordings were not commercially successful.
Though he sang the title track of the Disney soundtrack for the 1965 movie 'That Darn Cat,' he didn't sing it in the actual movie (it went to Bobby Darin).
After 'Emergency' ended he was cast in just two other TV series episodes before calling it quits in 1985.

Why he might not be annoying:

As a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, he became the first white officer given command of an all black unit (Jacksonville, NC).
He helped his troops upgrade their filthy living conditions at camp to the point where white Marines in other units were spending time at his camp, mingling with his troops.
His song '(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66' was made famous by Nat King Cole and covered by many others, including Chuck Berry and the Rolling Stones.
He was friends with Jack Webb, his second wife's (Julie London) first husband, to the point he adopted Webb's kids and was cast by him for the role of Dr. Early (Webb was executive producer of 'Emergency').
He was married to London for nearly forty years until his death.
