The Resume

    (September 1, 1913-September 17, 1993)
    Born in Los Angeles, California
Directed the films ‘The Thing from Another World’ (1951), ‘Light’s Diamond Jubilee’ (1954), ‘Hell on Devil’s Island’ (1957), ‘Young Fury’ (1965), ‘Operation C.I.A.’ (1965), and ‘First to Fight’ (1967)
Directed episodes of ‘Gunsmoke,’ ‘Wagon Train,’ ‘Bonanza,’ ‘Rawhide,’ ‘The Twilight Zone,’ ‘Private Secretary,’ ‘I Spy,’ ‘Adam-12,’ ‘Perry Mason,’ ‘Ironside,’ ‘The Rockford Files,’ ‘The Six Million Dollar Man,’ and ‘Kojak’

Why he might be annoying:

There is a long-standing rumor that ‘The Thing from Another World’ was really directed by Howard Hawks, who let Nyby get the credit so he could earn membership in the Directors Guild.
Hawks, as the film’s producer, kept nearly 90% of the $50,000 that RKO paid as a director’s fee for ‘The Thing.’
None of his later films came close to ‘The Thing’ in quality, which no doubt helped to keep the rumor alive.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was married to Thelma Litscher for 53 years.
He swiftly rose from studio carpenter to film editor to director.
He edited four of Hawks’ films (‘To Have and Have Not,’ ‘The Big Sleep,’ ‘Red River,’ and ‘The Big Sky’) and was widely credited with salvaging a botched first cut of ‘Red River.’
Hawks himself always insisted that Nyby had directed ‘The Thing,’ telling Peter Bogdanovich, ‘I though Chris did a good job.’
