    Notable roles include Mimi in 'La Boheme,' Nedda in 'Pagliacci,' Marguerite in 'Faust,' Cio-Cio San in 'Madama Butterfly,' Elisabeth in 'Tannhauser' and the title role in 'Carmen'
    During the semifinals of the Radio Barcelona Competition (1940), it was discovered that she was underage, and the rules were changed, allowing her to win.
    She left the Metropolitan Opera after a dispute with director Rudolf Bing (1961).
    She repeatedly retired and came back.
    She said, 'I never wanted to make a recording in my life. I am by nature a perfectionist and I never believe that what I am doing is good enough.'
    After her debut at the Met (1951), Virgil Thomson wrote, 'Last night she made everyone else on the stage seem, both musically and dramatically, a little amateurish.'
    She performed at the closing ceremonies of the Barcelona Olympics (1992).
    Her voice held up amazingly well over a four decade-plus career.
    Vocal coach David Stern said, 'Her voice was sexual, but invitingly, tantalizingly sexual, not dangerously.'
