Why she might be annoying:

She tried to eat a book when she was five.
She enjoyed dressing up as Oscar Wilde as a teenager.
Asked if she’d ever been married, she said, ‘I think I was a long time ago. I don’t remember.’
She has a pet plant named Hrotsvipa after an obscure Latin poet.
She dislikes TV, describing it as ‘made of light, like shame.’ (She may have a point.)

Why she might not be annoying:

She wasn’t celebrated in her native country Canada until she won recognition in the US.
She is known for her challenging poetry that often modernizes ancient myths.
Susan Sontag praised her as being part of a ‘less-than-fingers-on-one-hand group of writers.’
She was devastated by the death of her brother, a troubled runaway she hadn’t seen in 22 years.
She said the best thing about being famous was being met at the airport.
