Also acted in 'Rebel Without a Cause (1955),' 'The Strike (1955),' 'Designing Woman (1957),' 'Gift of Love (1958),' 'North by Northwest (1959),' 'Texas John Slaughter: The Man from Bitter Creek (1959),' 'Pollyanna (1960),' 'Atlantis, the Lost Continent (1961),' 'Cape Fear (1962),' 'A Ticklish Affair (1963)' and 'Bullet for a Badman (1964)'
Died of a heart attack at age 58

Why he might be annoying:

His family owned a tobacco farm in Kentucky.
He smoked.
He was typecast in movies as military officers, bosses, and other authority figures.
In 'Get Smart' he had an assistant named Larrabee, which was his character's name in 'North by Northwest.'
He was an intensely private man who rarely gave interviews or made promo personal appearances.

He served as a radio operator during World War II.
He was an accomplished opera singer.
He hosted a Texas children's TV program called 'Uncle Eddie's Birthday Party (1954).'
He was an usher at his Episcopalian church.
He gave new meaning to the term 'long suffering' in his role as Chief and was a perfect foil opposite bumbling Don Adams' 'Get Smart' character.
