TV Personality

The Resume

    (October 9, 1941- )
    Born in Lafayette, Indiana
    Founder and CEO of C-SPAN
Host and interviewer for the C-SPAN programs 'Booknotes,' 'Q&A' and 'Washington Journal'

Why he might be annoying:

In college, he hosted a local American Bandstand knockoff called 'Dance Date.'
He said that for years 'the only thing I was known to have ever done in my life' was escorting Lady Bird Johnson down the aisle at the wedding of Lynda Johnson and Chuck Robb.
He insists that he has never belonged to a political party, but he worked for the Nixon-Agnew presidential campaign (1968).
A New York Times Magazine profile said he 'has all the charisma of a test pattern. And none of the color.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He said about his low-key interviewing style, 'Too many interviewers intrude too much.… They try to make us think they're smarter than the person they're interviewing. Well, I assume I'm not smarter and if I am smarter I don't want the audience to find out.'
His insistence on asking guests to define any words that might be unfamiliar to the audience resulted in an amusing discussion with a Winston Churchill biographer about the meaning of 'buggery.'
He avoids the Washington, DC, party circuit to maintain his neutrality.
He said, 'My main goal in life was to open up the process so everybody could be heard in one way or another. And that's happened.'
He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his 'dedication to a transparent political system and to the free flow of ideas.' (2007)
