The Resume

    (January 21, 1938-June 24, 2019)
    Born in Sydney, Australia
Reporter for the (Sydney) Daily Mirror, the South China Morning Post, and the New York Post
Reporter on the TV program ‘A Current Affair’ (1986-95)
Co-wrote the book ‘Elvis: What Happened?’ with three former Memphis Mafia members (1977)

Why he might be annoying:

He quit school at age fourteen.
He was so competitive that when he and his father were reporters for rival Australian papers, he slashed the tires on his father’s car to get a scoop on a story.
He got into numerous drunken brawls. (‘Countless fights, yes, but alas, not a good win/loss record.’)
He repeatedly defended the police officers who assaulted Abner Louima with a plunger. (‘I didn’t believe it happened at all.’)
One snowy night, he and the fiancée of another reporter started humping in the alley next to Elaine’s, oblivious to their surroundings, until a snowplow ran over his foot.

Why he might not be annoying:

His father got his revenge on a later story by locking Steve in a laundry room. (‘I was trapped for hours.’)
He received death threats from Elvis fans.
He noted about his efforts to get a story, ‘I lost count of the number of times I posed as a cop, a public servant or a funeral director.’
An editor said, ‘Steve Dunleavy doesn’t just cover a story, he fights for it.’
