Football Player
The Resume
(December 31, 1971- )
Third overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft
Played for the Washington Redskins (1994-96) and New Orleans Saints (1997)
Signed by the Raiders (1998) but retired due to a foot injury
Owns Heath Shuler Real Estate
Why he might be annoying
He was touted as the next John Elway, a quarterback with a big arm that could run (it's safe to say he fell short on that comparison).
He held out as a rookie, and when he got to training camp, the first pass he threw was picked off. It was a sign of things to come.
In every season he played, he threw more interceptions than touchdowns.
He was the third overall pick, and was beat out by Gus Frerotte, who was selected in the final round of the 1994 draft.
If it weren't for Ryan Leaf, he would likely be considered the biggest quarterback bust in history. Many Redskin fans are still willing to argue that he is the bigger bust, because there were questions about Leaf's attitude when he was at Washington State.
He was probably booed more than any player in Redskin history.
He is running for US congress (2006).
A DC columnist wondered if he would get booed prior to even giving a speech, because that's what people do out of habit when they see him in Washington.
As evidenced by his real estate web site (completely done in Volunteer Orange and white), he still basks in his college glory.
Why he might not be annoying
He was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1993.
He is a Democrat seeking office in a very red state.
He is a progressive Christian, not a fundamentalist.
He has been successful with real estate.
